The brief

Lay the full technical and organisational foundations of Snoop, a social network for film and series recommendations, as CTO as a service.

Context

Snoop is a social network for film and series recommendations. At the start everything was still to be laid down: the architecture, the technology choices, the apps, the team. A social network sets hard constraints from day one, real-time feeds, notifications, moderation, scaling, and every early choice weighs for years. The brief, as fractional CTO for eighteen months: build the technical and organisational foundations, then the team that keeps them alive.

Approach

Full architecture and technology choices, from the back-end to the mobile apps: React Native and Expo for the iOS and Android apps, one codebase for both stores, Nest.js on the server for an API typed end to end. Hiring and structuring a team of five people, managed day to day with short rituals and systematic reviews, while writing a large share of the product myself to keep a hand on code quality.
